Travelling with my home on my back and in no hurry to get anywhere

Quitting smoking

I Quit!

Ok, I’ll admit it, I’m a bit worried about publishing my latest poem because I’m making such a public commitment – and I don’t want anyone to give me a hard time if it doesn’t work for me. So be kind, please….

I Quit!

I’m quitting, I’m giving up,
I can’t do this anymore,
I know it’s not good for my health
And money’s flying out the door.

You might think I talk of travelling,
The fuel costs are so high,
And the stress when money’s running low
Is enough to make me cry.

Or is it Brutus, my old campervan,
With the constant work to do.
He’s been faithful, but he’s getting old,
Perhaps it’s time for something new.

I can’t give up this lifestyle
So something’s got to give
So I’m tossing out the cigarettes!
I’ve got far more life to live!

They’re burning up my money,
It’s literally going up in smoke,
And I know about the side effects
So it’s time that I awoke

To all the bad things smoking does.
Yep, I’m going to quit the fags,
– Although I really do enjoy them –
So I’ll just have a few more drags!

And when this packet’s finished
I’m not buying any more,
And I’ll avoid the ciggy counter
When I go into a store.

I’m going to get some patches though,
Give me the best chance to quit,
And I know the next time we meet up
I’ll be healthier, and fit.

I’ve made myself this promise,
(I know, I’ve said it all before)
This time I’m going to do it!
I’m determined, that’s for sure.

How many’s left in the packet?
Oh no, there’s only four!
Well, I’m going to enjoy every last one of them
‘Cos when they’re gone there’ll be no more.

  1. As someone who has been toying with the idea of quitting smoking myself I greatly enjoyed this piece. Whilst there was a few instances when the rhythm went a little bit off I think it came together quite well! The writing feels fun and lively even with the context of the piece having a very serious purpose. Great work!

  3. Hey…I didn’t know you smoked. As you might remember I was a heavy smoker back in the day. One day just after Casey was born in 1984 I had to go to my local GP for some minor ailment. Dr John Dunning was his name. He said to me, “Do you want to be around for Casey’s fifth birthday?” “Yeah, Why?” I asked. “Well you won’t be, unless you give up smoking ..TODAY!” was his response. I had half a packet of Marlboro in my top pocket. Just chucked them away and haven’t smoked since. A couple of years later I was seriously injured in a hit-run road crash at Doncaster. Amongst the injuries were a crushed hip, broken collar bone and what is know as a ‘flail chest’…basically chest caved in with multiple rib fractures penetrating the lungs. The air in my lungs had escaped into my body tissue and I blew up like the Michelin Man…so badly that I couldn’t even open my eyes. The first words anyone said to me at that moment was from an Intensive care nurse who simply said, “You’re lucky you’re not a smoker.” “Why?” I managed to croak. “You wouldn’t have made it to hospital if you’d been a smoker.” She later explained to me that the damage to my lungs was so great that only a small amount of oxygen was being transferred to me blood…barely enough to stay alive. I’ve I’d been a smoker…what’s
left of my lungs would have been coated in nicotine…further reducing the oxygen flow,. If you drive a lot…as you do…that’s another good reason to give up the fags.
